::Devotional:: ‘When God Won’t Listen’

November 22, 2010

Do you ever feel like your prayers aren’t being heard?  Have you prayed for things for prolonged periods of time and yet don’t seem to even be able to see the smallest evidence that God’s listening to you?  What can you do when God won’t listen?  The thing about all these questions is that they have more to do with you than they actually have to do with God.

There are a variety of things that can hinder your prayers but I would say the one I’ve experienced the most in my life is unconfessed sin.  What is unconfessed sin?  It is the sins that I have done by doing something against the word of God, commission, as well as the sins that I have done by not doing something in line with the word of God, omission.  These sins create a barrier between God and us that needs to be dealt with on a daily basis.

But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear. Isaiah 59:2

When God won’t listen to our prayers it’s because there something wrong on our end.  We’re either praying out of selfish motives, living in the flesh and out of the will of God, or harboring unconfessed sin in our hearts.  There is only one way to deal with all of these areas and that is to confess them to God immediately.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.  1 John 1:9

How about you this morning?  Are you harboring unconfessed sin in your life?  Are you trying to hide something from the all-knowing mind and all-seeing eye of God?  If so, there’s only one person that will end up deceived and I can guarantee you it’s not God.  Remove the barrier, confess your sins to the Lord and restore your communication with your heavenly Father through prayer.
