::Devotional:: ‘A Man Is Incapable Of Leading On His Own’

September 13, 2010

Having a goatee is high maintenance.  Since I have chosen to be a member of the goatee club I have double duty – clean shaving part of my face along with trimming and edging the goatee.  One of the tools-of-the-trade I use is a $14 beard trimmer from Wal-mart and for the most part it does a great job.  However, since it is a rechargeable tool, every now and then I will go to use the trimmer only to have it die halfway through the trimming.  When it is powerless, it is useless, plain and simple.  A man is the same way – he is incapable of leading on his own because he is not powered by the holy spirit.

We’ve seen that a man can’t lead as the scriptures call him to lead without identifying and fulfilling his purpose.  Now, in order to fulfill that purpose a man must rely on the guidance and power of the holy spirit within his life.

Key Point 3 – Powering Purpose

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23

“And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.”  2 Corinthians 3:18

“But when he the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.  He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.  He will bring glory to me by taking rom what is mine and making it known to you.  All that belongs to the Father is mine.  that is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.”  John 16:12-15

Let me be clear on this one point in particular.  There are plenty of men in this world who lead in one direction or another without the power of the holy spirit.  I’m talking about men who are seeking to fulfill their purpose in Christ as it is laid out in the scriptures.  In order to be “that man” they will need to yield to the work of the holy spirit within them.

Men, without yielding to the work of the holy spirit within us, we are in a sense, powerless.  Just like my beard trimmer, it’s hard to use it for its intended purpose when it has no power.  Where do you need to yield today?  Receive power in your weaknesses as the glory of the Lord shines through!
