::Devotional:: ‘Objects of Mercy’

August 26, 2010

God’s word never ceases to amaze me.  There is always something to discover; something to be uncovered; something to create awe within us.  This morning I am struck God’s desire for glory.  I heard a man say one time, “When you are THE GOD of the universe, you have nothing else to promote but yourself, and rightfully so.”  God saved me to bring glory to his name.  He made me an object of mercy for the praise of his name.

Paul reminds us, in is letter to the Ephesians, that by our very nature we are considered objects of wrath.

Like the rest, we were by our nature objects of wrath.  Ephesians 2:3

Thankfully, the Lord has a greater purpose in mind than simply to let us remain as objects of his wrath.  In Paul’s letter to the Romans he points out that God receives the glory when we, the objects of his wrath, become the objects of his mercy.

22 What if God, choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patiencethe objects of his wrath–prepared for destruction? 23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory— 24 even us, whom he also called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?  Romans 9:22-24

It’s important to have the proper perspective on our salvation because that is what sets our motivation to serve.  If we think that our salvation is all about us, we’ve missed the mark friends.  Salvation is about the glory of God.  He gets the credit for taking an object of his wrath and making it an object of his mercy.

Dear Lord help us not to be deceived into thinking that you share your Lordship with us.  Our lives are not our own, they have been bought with a price.  Help us to live today as the objects of your mercy with the mindset to glorify your name.  In Jesus’ name, Amen.
