::Devotional:: ‘I Want To Know Him More’

August 17, 2010

I’m not a huge fan of church marquee signs, but the other day I saw one that comes to my mind this morning.  It said, “The man who knows everything has a lot to learn.”  It struck me because I’ve often said that things progress so quickly in today’s world that in the time it would a take person to say “I know everything” they would have just missed something.  Knowledge is limitless; there is always more to learn.  In fact, even more of the vast reality of God can be known.  He makes himself available to be known through the scriptures.  He wants to be known and I want to know him more.

The Apostle Paul fervently prayed that the Lord would give the believers in Ephesus the opportunity to know him [God] more.

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.  Ephesians 1:17

I think I need to hold on to that prayer and pray it fervently for my son Maverick.

Paul prayed that the hearts of the Ephesians would be enlightened so that they could know more of God, but exactly what more was able to be know.  Consider Ephesians 1:18:

  • that you may know…
    • the hope to which he has called you
    • the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints
    • his incomparably great power for us who believe

Take a second and ponder what we have just read.  The God of heaven and earth wants to be known intimately.  So intimately in fact that he can lavish the riches of his love upon us and give us an incomparably great power because of our faith.  Wherever you are today, know that you have a God who already knows you, loves you, and wants to be known by you.
