::Devotional:: ‘Someone’s Always Listening’

Isn’t it amazing  that we can go into a crowded restaurant and sit at a booth only inches away from someone else and think that we have privacy?  Or that because the isle at the grocery store is empty we can have a confidential conversation with someone that nobody else can here?  Somehow we arrive at a false sense of security and that can be troublesome because in places like that, someone is always listening.

Yesterday I was at a place of business waiting for the next available attendant so I could take care of a couple things.  I happened to be waiting right next to another customer who was already being helped and was engaging in a conversation with an employee.  It surprised me how secure this customer felt in this environment as was evident by the topic of her conversation.

The topic of the conversation is irrelevant to the devotion this morning because I simply want to remind us that our words are powerful and should be chosen carefully.  Often what we think is private or is being ignored by others around us is not.  Whether we’re in the grocery store, a crowded restaurant, at home behind closed doors, or even in the car alone – we need to be mindful of our words.

May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.  Psalm 19:14

This verse reminds us that not only are other people listening to what we say, but the Lord is ALWAYS listening to us – even to the meditations of our heart.  May we have wisdom in our words, tactfulness with our tongues, and humility in our hearts today.
