::Devotional:: ‘Obedience Is A Learned Behavior’

July 19, 2010

They always say that nobody teaches a child to lie or to be selfish don’t they?  I mean rebellion comes natural to all of us because of our sin nature.  What a child needs to be taught is obedience.  As Christians, we’re not very different.  Our natural tendency is to rebel against God; our obedience to him is a learned behavior.

As I was reading through Psalm 119 this morning for my daily prayer journal time I noticed a particular verse that stood out to me and led to this morning’s devotion.

Teach me, O LORD, to follow your decrees; then I will keep them to the end.  Psalm 119:33

The goal, or the place where we all want to be, in this passage is implied to be the keeping of the Lord’s decrees to the end.  How do we get there?  Well, the obvious answer is to follow the Lord’s decrees.  Obedience.  But remember, obedience is a learned behavior.  We are prone to the influence of our old sin nature even as born again believers.  That’s why the verse starts out with, “Teach me O Lord.”

Are we willing students?  Are we looking for the Lord’s instructions daily?  Are we seeking out the teachings of his word and his training to be obedient to them?  Tough questions for a Monday morning I know, but there’s no better time to get back on track than right now.
