::Devotional:: ‘Honesty Is The Best Policy Of Prayer’

July 14, 2010

Have you ever tried to hide something from the Lord while you pray?  That issue that you are either too ashamed to bring up or something you know you should pray for but for whatever reason you just don’t want to?  Maybe it’s something you constantly worry about but think is too silly or trivial to bring before the Lord?  Maybe today is the day you need to address it with the Lord.  Honesty is the best policy of prayer.

I think the two biggest things that prevent me from bringing something before the Lord in prayer is that I’m hesitant to deal with something and also that I’m hesitant because it might be something foolish.  The problem with both of those thoughts is that God already knows everything and is expecting me to be honest with him about what I’m dealing with.

Remember these three points as you head into you next prayer time with the Lord:

  • Study God’s Word, the Bible, to become more familiar with Him and what His will is

If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.  John 15:7

  • Lift up your prayers so that they line up with God’s will

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him  1 John 5:14-15

  • Be honest about your hesitation, concerns, worries, or lack of understanding when you pray so that God can help you deal with those things

Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.  Jeremiah 33:3

Prayer is often a struggle for many people.  I think one of the main reasons that is the case is because true prayer is an act of submission to the authority, control, and Lordship of Jesus Christ.  For many Christians, control is not something easily released.  Take time today to submit to the Lord in prayer.  Pray humbly and honestly before him.  He promises in his word that if you will draw near to him he will in fact draw near to you.
