::Devotional:: ‘Finding The Loopholes’

April 27, 2010

If the sign at the pool says “No Diving” that must mean backflips, forward flips, cannonballs, and can openers are ok right?  If the sign outside the convenience store says “No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service” that must mean that as long as we’re not looking for service or to purchase anything can enter without a shirt or shoes right?  What about the sign that says “No Loitering In Front Of Building?”  Does that mean the sides and the back are ok?  This all sounds foolish because it is foolish.  Sometimes we sound the same way when we look for the loopholes in God’s word and plan for our lives.

The term “loophole” comes from the 15th century Middle European word “loupe”, pronounced the same, which literally means a hole in the wall.  The hole could be used discharge small arms fire on the enemy or some were still big enough to be used as a means of escape.  This, means of escape, is how the word is used most often today.

a means of escape or evasion; a means or opportunity of evading a rule, law, etc. –

It’s easy, perhaps even natural from our sin nature, to look for loopholes in the law of the Lord.  Many people miss the message of the whole Bible because they are looking for the holes in the Bible, figuratively speaking.  We might could find justification for our actions if we backflipped into a pool that said “No Diving”, but with the Lord it’s different.  God, our heavenly Father knows the very motives our heart behind our actions and thoughts.

for the LORD searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts. If you seek him, he will be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.  1 Chronicles 28:9

What about you today?  Are you missing the whole message of the Bible because your focused on finding the loopholes that will let you do what you want and still be labeled a Christian? My friend if that is you, the time for playing games is over.  The Lord knows your motives.  The only motivation behind looking for loopholes is sin and that needs to be confessed to the Lord immediately.  It’s impossible to grow in Christ and go your own way at the same time.  Seek him and you will find him today.
