::Devotional:: ‘To the Glory of His name’

January 27, 2010

We are born looking out for number one.  Even before we can talk we can communicate to others what our wants and needs are.  We cry out when we’re hungry, when we’re uncomfortable, when we’re tired, and even when we’re just plain upset.  Our needs are always put first.  Of course at some point hopefully we grow up and move beyond that childhood stage, right?  In fact, by becoming a Christian we are forced to move beyond that stage when we are born again spiritually.  Interestingly enough, there’s still a desire to look out for number one; only this time we understand that number one is Jesus.

The scriptures are saturated with the call to bring glory to God’s name.  That is the purpose for our lives as believers here on Earth.  A friend of mine recently said it this way, “if God didn’t want us to do anything but get saved we would be raptured the moment we accepted Jesus into our hearts.”  We know that since we weren’t raptured, we are saved, and we are still here there must be something else to our purpose than just being saved.

Our purpose is to live out our lives in such a way that the Lord is honored.  We live to the Glory of His name.

  • The Lord saves us to the Glory of His name
  • The Lord blesses us to the Glory of His name
  • The Lord tests us to the Glory of His name
  • The Lord is gracious, merciful, and forgiving to us to the Glory of His name
  • The Lord uses us to the Glory of His name
  • The Lord empowers us by the power of the Holy Spirit to the Glory of His name
  • The Lord works miracles to the Glory of His name
  • The Lord answers prayers to the Glory of His name
  • The Lord grants and withholds our requests to the Glory of His name
  • The Lord disciplines us to the Glory of His name
  • The Lord judges to the Glory of His name

Yes, LORD, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name and renown are the desire of our hearts.  Isaiah 26:8

Could there be any greater purpose in all of eternity than existing for the sole reason of bringing glory to the name of the Lord God Almighty?  Worship him today.  Live your life to the Glory of His name!
