::Devotional:: ‘Tainted Beauty’

January 22, 2010

A purple mountain’s majesty set as the backdrop of a field surging with amber waves of grain.  The Grand Canyon’s colors ablaze in the evening sun.  The blue ridge mountains skirted by the early morning fog.  God’s creation is magnificent.  Has the thought ever crossed your mind that even in all of its splendor the fact still remains that its beauty is tainted by sin?

In Genesis, God cursed the earth because of Adam and Eve’s sin.

“Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life. 18 It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”  Genesis 3:17-19

Since that moment, creation has been under the opression of sin.  The Bible says it was “subjected to frustration.”

For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.  Romans 8:18-21

Isn’t it amazing to think that all we see as the epitome of beauty in creation is only a minute fraction of the splendor it was originally created to display?

Dwell in awesomeness of God today.

    Tony, I love this one. I often bask in the beauty, but never really thought about it as a “step down”, other than of course the obvious ways that mankind finds to trash it.
