::Devotional:: ‘Actions Speak Louder’

October 20, 2009

My Sunday school class was discussing the book of Galatians the other day and a passage of scripture we reviewed keeps coming to mind this morning.  It seems like the Lord keeps reminding me of the importance of a genuine and visible love for other people.  In fact, Paul wrote to the Galatians that the only thing of any real value in determining our devotion to the Lord is our faith expressing itself through love towards others.

That’s huge when you think about it.  The only thing of any real value is faith displayed in love?  The Galatians were getting caught up in trying to determine what they had to “do”, namely circumcision, in order to be justified before God.  They wanted to know what really mattered to Him.  Paul’s response to their concern was clear and concise.

But by faith we eagerly await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope.  For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value.  The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.  Galatians 5:5-6

Just a few paragraphs later Paul re-emphasizes the importance and the value of our faith expressing itself towards others by loving them.  “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2

The law of Christ is simply to “love God and love others as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-40)  Sometimes we look for that twelve step program to a deeper spiritual walk with the Lord, when all we really need to do is focus on what really matters – faith expressing itself through love.  True, unconditional, and unselfish love.  God love.  Agape love.

This is how we know what love is:  Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.  And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.  If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?  Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.  This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence whenever our hearts condemn us.  For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.  1 John 3:16-20

I’ve been caught up in the business of life and ministry before and completely forgotten this basic principle.  Programs became a higher priority than people and what I thought mattered really didn’t.  John says that we are to love with our actions more than our words.  Warm words need to be accompanied with warm actions.  Our actions speak louder than any of our words.  We should all take some time today to think about what we are really saying to others.
