::Devotional:: ‘I am Second – Blake Mankin’

August 7, 2009

Picture 1“What Jesus is to me is that ultimate thirst quencher.”  Blake is a young man, raised in a Christian home, attending school in an affluent city, who has taken ownership of his faith and responded to the urging of the Holy Spirit upon him.  A trip to the Sudan opened his eyes to the drastic contrast between his life and the lives of those who dwell in the midst of poverty and anguish.  When most people would ask why would God allow people to live like that, Blake asked how could God allow people, like those in his community, to be so distracted and so affluent in life?  Take a few minutes, watch the video, and come back to join me for some time in the Word.

After The Video

Perspective is such an important aspect of our lives.  As Blake talked about his childhood he mentioned a point where his parents helped him to gain the right perspective by encouraging him to  own his own faith rather than relying on theirs as he had done growing up.  His perspective of the life lived through the faith of his parents was not going to carry him very far, he needed a life of faith from his perspective. In owning his own faith in Jesus Christ, Blake began to see his community from a different perspective.  Those who had in abundance had the opportunity to provide for those in need.  In the midst of that moment, Blake also began to see his life as a Christian from God’s perspective.

You my brothers, were called to be free.  But do not sue your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love.  The entire law is summed up in a single command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”  Galatians 5:13-14

God has purposed that we, as his children, be vessels and stewards of His grace, mercy, forgiveness, and compassion towards other people.  But have we become distracted from that purpose by our affluence?  Has our perspective become Self-centered rather than God-centered?  As Blake says, what if; what if we became second to that purpose and to God’s perspective?  Would the world see us or would they see the Awesome God we serve?  Determine in your mind today to become second.
