::Devotional:: ‘I am Second – Jason Castro’

August 6, 2009

Picture 1As I watched Jason Castro speak on this video, one word kept coming to my mind.  Humility.  Jason was a contestant on American Idol and has been gifted with musical talents.  But music is merely an avenue that communicates about what is behind the music.  Jason says “there’s always something bigger behind whatever you’re doing.”  Take a few minutes, watch the video, and come back to join me for some time in the Word.

After The Video

“Through getting to know God, I have purpose” Jason says.  With life goals to be a good father, a faithful husband, and a servant to all; it is easy to see how getting to know God has given Jason purpose that has helped him prioritize his life.  One of the priorities in his life is to write good music, music that communicates about life and a life that is lived in Christ.  I appreciate his comments that working for God’s glory doesn’t necessarily mean singing worship songs but rather singing about life and things that are worthy of praise.

Let the Word of God dwell in you richly as you teach admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.  And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.  Colossians 3:16-17

I remember several years ago I turned on the radio and heard a Chris Rice song on a Christian station called “When did you fall”.  It is a song where he attempts to figure out where he and his wife first fell in love with each other.  However, my first reaction was confusion.  What was this doing on a Christian radio station?  It had nothing to do with God.  After a few weeks though, God revealed the failure in my thought process.  Isn’t love between a man and woman of God as husband and wife something worthy of praise?  Is God’s hand not in that?  In fact, I’ve come to the point where I wish there were more songs on Christian radio that were about life.  Songs about The Journey – venturing in the abundant life of Christ, ya know?

All we experience in life  are notes in the chords of our lifesong.  Our lifesong is music that communicates about what is behind the music, namely Christ.  What is your lifesong singing about today?  If I may paraphrase Paul’s words to the Colossians, “In whatever you do, become second, and glorify the Lord Jesus.”
