::Devotional:: ‘I am Second-Ashley’

August 3, 2009

Picture 1This weekend I came across a ministry called “I am second” with the mission to help real people deal with real problems and discover their God given purpose in the midst of all that is going on in their lives.  It is about the freedom we can experience by realizing that in our lives as Christians, we come second to God.  The Bible says that Jesus has the preeminence over, or is positioned first before, all creation, including us.  This week I’d like to share some of the “I Am Second” videos with you and as they stir our hearts, take the opportunity to dig into God’s Word for application to our own lives.Today’s video is about Ashley.  Ashley struggled with an eating disorder, an ironic attempt to gain a sense of control on her life, which caused her to lose control and lose her perspective of who she was.  Take a few minutes, watch the video, and come back to join me for some time in the Word.

After the video:

Ashley desperately searched for control in her life.  Control that would give her a sense of being purposeful in her attempt to portray a perfect image.  Her family didn’t talk about real struggles and real problems that occur in the reality of life because they wanted to maintain a certain image before the community.  So often, we separate our reality from our relationship with the Lord.  Yet God is glorified in the midst of the reality of our lives. But why are we afraid to share our struggles?  Why are we afraid to share our reality with others?  Has our image become more important than the God who created us in His image?

Romans 14:7-8 says

For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone.  If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord.  So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.

I’m sure each of us can identify with Ashley’s story, but what do we do that knowledge?  What can we take away from identifying with her struggles for control in her life, her eating disorder, and her pursuit of the perfect image? Well, I believe it is important to realize that God cares about our struggles, our problems, our desires, and pain.  At the moment Ashley was in the midst of a dark place, God’s light shown through in His Word.  When she picked up the Bible and turned to Romans 14:7-8, she realized just how close God was to her and how much he wanted to help her.  We would all do well to mark God’s Word and remember what He has promised

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18

In a society where “Image Is Everything” we have no greater opportunity to reveal our true image, what we were created to do, than when we come to the end of ourselves; brokenhearted, crushed in spirit, yet running to God to be rescued and restored.  Our image is second to God’s image.  Purpose in your heart to be second today.
