“When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.”   These opening words have served as the preamble to the U.S. Declaration of Independence since it was officially signed on July 4, 1776.  Essentially, they state that when a group of people find it necessary to set themselves apart from prior ties that they no longer agree with, they ought to take the time to declare why they have set out to be independent for the sake of mankind.

In the spirit of such words and such a document, as the U.S. Declaration of Independence, I thought it would be good to write down a few of the reasons why we as believers are no longer tied to sin but have become dependent upon Jesus.  

A Declaration of Dependence:

Sin has separated mankind from God and has established itself as the sole cause of the fall of man.  By one man’s trespass against God in sin, all men were condemned.  To prove the ferocity of sin, let the facts be submitted to the world.

  • Sin has introduced death and destruction to the world.
  • Sin has influenced us to be prideful and selfish, exalting ourselves rather than God the Father.
  • Sin has led us to believe that only that which is pleasing to the flesh is good and worthy of experiencing.
  • Sin has led us away from God causing us to distrust our own creator
  • Sin has broken apart our marriages and caused competition between husbands and wives for control of the relationship
  • Sin has caused us to disobey God

The results of such sin positioned us to receive the wrath of a holy and righteous God, who in His very nature, can not have fellowship with such sin and thus must destroy it.  But God has proven his love for us in that while we were yet sinners he sent his only begotten son Jesus to die as the atoning sacrifice for all mankind and that whoever would believe in him would not parish but have everlasting life.  Just as through the disobedience of the one man many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.

We, therefore, those who have believed on Jesus and in him have redemption through his blood – the forgiveness of sins – in accordance with the riches of God’s grace; who have been transformed from aliens, foreigners, and slaves to sin into fellow citizens with God’s people and members of God’s household and slaves to righteousness declare ourselves dependent upon our God, our Father, our Lord – King Jesus.
